Can’t decide between a full walk-in tub or a conversion kit meant to transform ordinary baths into extraordinary ones that offer safety and comfort? There are a few things to consider before moving full steam ahead with either option.
To help ease the decision-making
process, consider these points before moving full steam ahead with a purchase:
·
The feature requirement – If the biggest reason behind a walk-in tub purchase is
the elimination of the traditional 20-inch step over most tubs have, a
conversion kit will work as well as a new tub purchase. Keep in mind that new
walk-in tubs may also offer other safety features that combine to more greatly
reduce hazards in the bathroom, including grab bars and safety seats.
Conversion kits can be upgrade with safety seats to assist on this front
though. The purchase just might be an extra one.
·
The space the tub must go – If the plan is to retrofit and existing bathroom with a
walk-in tub, it is possible to use either model. Walk-in
tubs are available in sizes that
enable them to fit directly into a space once occupied by a traditional tub.
Should there be a need to retrofit a room that doesn’t currently serve as a
bath, a new tub will likely be required. Walk-in tub models are available in
many sizes to accommodate retrofitting needs. This type of need might arise in
a home where the bath is on the second floor, but an elderly or mobility
challenged loved one can no longer navigate stairs. If plumbing and drains are
available in a different area, a smaller walk-in may be used.
·
The condition of an existing tub – If an existing tub is old, damaged or otherwise
unserviceable, replacing it with a new walk-in tub is likely the better choice.
Conversion kits are designed to work with most modern bathtub designs, but they
may not fit older models.
·
Budget –
Transforming a traditional tub with a
conversion kit can be a cost-savings
measure. If the elimination of the step over is a must and money is tight, a
walk in may prove to be a wise choice.
Fully replacing or installing a new
walk-in tub provides benefits that do go beyond conversions. These designs
generally also have such features as hot water jets, massage, fast drains and
so on. Before making a final decision, review all options to find the best
solution for the space in question. If safety is the top priority, either
choice will be a sound one.
