Walk-In Tub or Walk-In Shower: Which Should You Choose?

Bathing can be a very big concern for people who suffer from disabilities or face age-related mobility challenges. The prospect of having to give up privacy in this room can be especially damaging to self-esteem while placing a larger burden on any caregivers to ensure safety in the bathroom. Fortunately, walk-in tub and walk-in shower models provide the perfect solution for many. When these unique designs are used to replace existing bathroom fixtures or are used to retrofit other wet rooms in a home, those with mobility challenges can regain their independence. Making the choice between the two, however, can be a little difficult.

Since both walk-in tub and walk-in shower models offer exceptional accessibility and safety features, it is hard to go wrong with either selection. There are some questions that should be asked and answered before a final decision is made. Here are the things to consider to ensure a great choice:

·         The amount of space available – If an existing bathroom will not be remodeled to accommodate a walk-in tub or shower, space considerations will matter. Walk-in tubs can be found in rather compact sizes, but barrier-free showers may better suit especially small spaces.

·         The equipment that will be replaced – Swapping out an existing traditional tub with a walk-in model is generally a relatively simple task if a full-sized walk-in tub model is selected. Refurbishing the room for a barrier-free shower, however, may require more extensive renovations in some cases. The same goes for swapping out an existing standalone shower stall for a barrier-free shower.

·         The features that are desired – If spa-quality features are desired, such as whirlpool jets, heated seating and other perks, the walk-in tub is the perfect choice to make. Some designs are so advanced in their therapeutic features that many families are choosing them for use regardless of residents’ ages and mobility status. Barrier-free showers simply are not designed to offer the same features tubs may boast.

When the need to address mobility, challenges are a pressing concern, both walk-in tub and shower models will serve perfectly. To decide between the two, consider the space, the requirements and any added features desired.
